OUR STORY SO FAR
UNITING CREATIVITY AND TASTE. SINCE '06

2006
The Maiden Voyage
In 2006 Great Western Brewing company was established in The Old Bakery in the village of Hambrook.
In the following two years we built a brewery and brewed our first ever beer.
Over the next 13 years, our passion, hard work, and love for this craft would win us multiple awards for our traditional cask beers brewed in open-top fermenters. The same pints that are still winning in todays competitions.

2019
Time To Evolve
In 2019 we made the decision to say goodbye to our much loved home of the past 13 years. The volume of sales increased and we needed to expand our operation to a new, larger site. With our new home came a lot of work, a borehole to get pure Bristol water, the install of a brand new state-of-the-art brew kit, and a refresh of the name and design.
Hop Union Brewery was born.

2023
National GOLD Award
Bloody Nora wins our first National Gold Award, voted best in the country for Speciality IPA's. An incredibly proud moment for everyone here that showcased what we can do. We didn't stop there as Nora now has 6 individual awards all achieved in the last 4 years making it our most decorated brew so far.

2023
The Taproom
Opening in March 2023, the taproom started as a space for people to meet up and try brand new beers amongst friends. Now, it has evolved into a true hub of the community. More than just a taproom but instead a real pub vibe in a new and exciting setting.
We host a bi-weekly quiz, regular live music events, ever-changing food vendors, tasting events and loads more cementing ourselves with our amazing surrounding community. We aim to constantly provide a space for everyone to enjoy (including the dog!)
Currenlty open Thursday to Saturday with plans to expand! Come down, grab a pint, and be a part of the action

2024
Forever innovating
With more space and a constant desire to expand and evolve, we are always adding new kit to innovate and grow.
In 2024 we installed three new 30-hectolitre fermenting vessels and some 150L fermenters for small-batch brews.
In 2025 we updated our pilot kit and purchased a centrifuge to push the boundaries of craft beer and create new and exciting flavours with more clarity and an even quicker turnaround to keep up with the demand.

2025
Gluten-free Beers
Using a special enzyme in our beers, we break down the gluten to produce top-quality brews completely gluten-free.
We will always aim to make our products as accessible as they can be. Starting in 2025, we had Bonville Pale, Maiden Voyage, Bloody Nora, and Two Steppin' officially certified as gluten-free.
In 2026, we've now made 7 of our core range free of gluten now adding Moose River, Saint Arnold, and Whakapapa ensuring more of our beers can be enjoyed by more and more people.

2026
20 years of independent brewing
In 2026, we celebrate 20 years of independent brewing. Through these years we've grown massively. From open top fermenters producing traditional real ale that is still going strong today, to producing new age, modern craft beer that has been voted the best in it's class. It's been a long journey filled to the brim with great beer, amazing people, and endless expansion. We're incredibly proud of where we are today and we cannot wait to see what the future holds.
Here's to the next 20 years!
